This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
